Zhang Mingwen’s Ceramic Art

     Zhang Mingwen, native of Cicun Village Zibo, Shandong Province. He graduated from the Arts and Crafts Class of the Shandong Industrial Cadres’ school in 1960. Now he is a Ceramics Art Master of China, President of the Ceramic Carving Society of the China ceramics Association. His name spread overseas in 1982 when he iectured on ceramic carving art in the Department of the Arts of the Tennessee University. His paper The Art of Ceramic Carving and Its Aesthetic Enjoyment was the first academic writing on this subject in China. This and the book The Ceramic Carving Art of Zhang Mingwen published by the Chinese Foreign Culture Press have won him fame.

    Zhang is an expert in the plastic art of ceramics and good at Chinese calligraphy,painting and poetry. He chanced on the art of ceramic carving in 1974 and has since then reaped fruitful achievement in this field.

    Master Zhang has won more than 50 awards for his outstanding achievements in ceramic art.among them are a first prize at the national ceramic innovation contests for his surface decorations on a dinner set of the Shandong ceramics,a gold medal at an international ceramics fair for his minute carving of The Analectsof Confucius on a piece of ceramics,a silver medal for his work Song of Orchids at the Light Industry Faira silver of the national and ministerial level for his 72 pupils the exhibition of which won warm approval in Hong Kong in 1991.In 1995 he was invited by the People’s China Press to design the cover and illustrations of the four Chinese literary masterpieces. On the invitation of cultural circles of Hong Kong in 1997, he designed the sculptures of the 28 Hong Kong governors in the 100-year history of the colony. Authorized by the Ministry of Light Industry, he penned the book Standards for the Grading of Ceramic Carving of China in 1989. The1981 German edition of the book Karl Mark has a reproduction of Zhang’s carved ceramic work of the portrait of Mark which was the first work of Chinese ceramic carving that has appeared on a foreign publication.
